CK LMS: Mentoring and Coaching

What is a manager today? Or rather what should a manager be? Someone with technical expertise? Or someone who knows how to get people working together towards optimum performance? Whatever the answer, one thing is certain: a manager is not so much someone who does things, as someone who gets things done and is able to implement change within a team. Today, being a manager means understanding some basic principles of psychology, as well as using appropriate methods for implementing change and supporting people through it. What usually makes people slow to adopt more effective methods or reluctant to embrace change has to do with the mental picture they have of their working environment. By making people aware of these mental representations and getting them to modify them, the manager can durably change people’s attitudes. A grounding in the principles of coaching is indispensable for anyone who is convinced that ‘change cannot be decreed from above’.
